  5. Cyberbullying Here at MMS Out of a 100 sixth grade students surveyed during the 2008-2009 school year. • 42 Students have MySpace Accounts • 50 Students have computers in their rooms • 38 Students have been Cyberbullied

  6. Bully vs. Cyberbullying • Bully: Put downer who harasses and demeans others, especially those who they think are different or inferior.

  7. What is Cyberbullying? • Using communication technology such as email, cell phones, chat rooms instant messaging, blogs, or defamatory personal websites to send or post repeated deliberate, cruel and harmful text or images.

  8. 8 Forms of Cyberbullying • Flaming: Using inflammatory or vulgar words to provoke an on-line fight. • Harassment: Continually sending vicious, mean, or disturbing e-mails to an individual. • Denigration: Spreading rumors, lies, or gossip to hurt a person’s reputation. • Impersonation: Posting offensive or aggressive messages under another person’s name.

Trickery: Fooling someone into sharing personal information which then post online. 7. Exclusion: Purposefully excluding someone from an online group. 8. Cyberstalking: Ongoing harassment and denigration that causes a person considerable fear for his/her safety.

  10. Protecting yourself on-line • Guard screen names & passwords. • Guard contact information • Use gender neutral screen names. • Accept messages only from people on your friends list • Take a stand amongst your peers • Use Netiquette

  11. If Harassed • Tell an adult • Leave area immediately (chat room, website, online gaming site, etc.) • Never Reply. Block the sender. • Save harassing emails & send them to your internet service provider. • If the bullying involves threats, tell the police.

Warning Signs of Cyberbullying Victim • Unexpectedly stops using the computer • Appears nervous or jumpy when an instant message, text message or email appears • Appears uneasy about going to school or outside in general • Appears to be angry, depressed or frustrated after using the computer • Avoids discussions about what they are doing on the computer • Become abnormally withdrawn from usually friends and family members

Statistics-Are based on a 2005 survey from 1500 adolescents participants • 34.4% of respondents reported that they were bullied. • 12.6% were physically threatened and 5 % were scared for their safety. • 55.6 percent experienced bullying in chatrooms, and 48.9 using computer text. • 28% were bullied by email.
