PC-Card Hardware Radio Hardware 802.11 frame format WMAC controller with Station Firmware (WNIC-STA) 802.3 frame format Platform Computer Driver Software (STADr) Ethernet V2.0 / 802.3 frame format Protocol Stack Station FirmwareAssure compatibility between driver and FW • ORiNOCO PC Card (or USB Adapter) operates its FW from RAM • Firmware may need to be changed • Fixes • Improvements • Tuning • Newly released MAC functions • Firmware needs to pass compatibility check of higher layers (Driver, Client Manager) • FW can move to RAM from: • On-board FlashROM (during device start-up) • From Windows driver (downloads FW into PC Card’s RAM) when driver loads. • Windows drivers include STA Firmware to match the driver version • No mismatch between driver and STA FW anymore
Station FirmwarePermanent change to FlashROM • There maybe need for permanent FW change: • When driver that is not able to load FW • When using the PC Card in Outdoor Router • Permanent change to STA FW to be made by so-called “WSU” utility • Made available via web site, to allow field upgrades • Products leaving factory always upgraded to most recent version • WSU available on release CD-ROM • Downgrading possible if previous version of Utility has been kept • Execute WSU Utility (e.g. double click the Icon in the Windows explorer)
Driver Installation/configurationOverview • Windows 95/NT4/98/SE/2000/ME • Uses NDIS driver • Use EZ Install or manual installation • Install Hardware (ISA card, PCI card, PC Card) • PC Card is recognized when inserted • Add/Edit profiles • NOVELL • Uses ODI driver (also used by Windows for Workgroup) • Parameters in NET.CFG • DOS • Packet driver
Driver Installation/configuration Non-Windows based systems • For example: Novell clients, Windows for Workgroup • Edit (if needed) configuration and ini files such as: • Autoexec.bat • Config.sys • Net.cfg (for Novell Netware users) • protocol.ini (for Windows for Workgroups) • For details consult the ORiNOCO PC Card manual, Readme.txt files or quick installation manual

Driver Installation/configuration Using EZinstall • Select the mode of operation • Peer-to-peer (IBSS) • Using an Residential Gateway • Using an AP (such as AP-500, AP-1000, AP-2000) • Subsequent questions depend on mode selected • Network name (SSID) • WEP encryption settings • Power Management settings
Adding/Editing profilesUsing the configuration wizard • Driver settings form a operational “profile” • Multiple (up to 99) profiles can be created (each having their own parameters) • Parameters are stored in registry (each profile has separate section) • Adding/editing profiles performed using “profile wizard” • Profile wizard can be activated by: • Control panel applet • Menu on the Client Manager’s tray-bar Icon
Adding/Editing profilesUsing the configuration wizard • Provide profile name for later selection • Select type of network operation • Access Point (AP-500, AP-1000, AP-2000) • Residential Gateway • Peer-to-Peer Group (IBSS) • Press “Next”
Adding/Editing profilesAccess Point or Residential Gateway • When selecting Access Point or Residential Gateway: • Enter the Network Name set in the Access Points (= SSID) or, • Press Scan to list the “open” networks that can be sensed from the position of the station (“closed” networks will not show in the scan list) • Default network name for an RG is identified on a sticker on the device • Press “Next” to continue
Adding/Editing profilesAccess Point or Residential Gateway For AP • When using an Access Point: • Select “Enable Data Security”, when needed (when enabled on APs) • Up to 4 keys to be entered • Valid keys are stings of: • 5 ASCII or 10 hexadecimal characters (Silver cards, 64 bit WEP) • 13 ASCII or 26 hexadecimal characters (Gold cards, 128 bit RC4) • Entered keys will be masked with asterisks • Select the active transmission key from the index • When using an Residential Gateway: • Single key to be entered • Press “Next” to continue For RG
Adding/Editing profilesPower Management / IP address switch • Enable/disable power management on PC card, by selecting matching radio button • Press “Next” • Enable/disable “Renew IP Address when selecting this profile” • Will release current IP Address followed by DHCP request for new IP address when profile becomes active • Do not select if the profile defines a network without a DHCP server • Click “Finish” to complete (new profile created)
Adding/Editing profilesPeer-to-Peer operation • When selecting Peer-to-Peer network: • Enter the Network Name of the network to attach to or to that is to be started • Using a Network name used by an active “open” AP will change the operational mode to “Access Point” (station will associate to the access point) • Select the operational channel to use (becomes active channel when starting the network) • Data encryption (on next screen) supports one WEP key only • Power management can not be activated in this mode

Operating the Client Manager Diagnostic functions • Diagnostic functions are available via the “Advanced” item on the menu bar: • PC Card diagnostics • RF Link test • Site Monitor
Operating the Client Manager Diagnostic functions - test card • Card Diagnostics runs a series of tests on different elements of the communication HW and SW to check the integrity of the device • For support purposes a report can be generated
Operating the Client Manager Diagnostic functions - link test • RF link test is the single most important test to verify the quality of the wireless link between two stations • In AP mode link test is always between client station and AP • In peer to peer mode link test is executed between client station and another client to be selected from a list of explored stations • Test results show snapshot readings of SNR, Signal and Noise and indication of attainable data-rate
Operating the Client Manager Diagnostic functions - history chart • History test shows selected values over time • Values to be displayed can be selected from drop list: • SNR • Signal and Noise (two separate lines) • Ranges for Noise, Signal or SNR • Very useful to detect noise spikes
Operating the Client Manager Diagnostic functions - logging • Test results can be logged to disk for later analysis • User identified file • Manual logging (on user command) • Automatic logging (after every x seconds) • Continuous logging
Operating the Client Manager Diagnostic functions - Site Monitor • Site monitor allows a user to “see” all APs with the same network name, from a location. • Display to be configured by the user by selecting items to show from drop down list • AP names can be assigned to locate APs easily. • Names are maintained in file aplist.txt in association with the MAC address of the PC Card in the AP • Can be created by editing or using AP names discovery function
