  2. BACKGROUND • 36 beach/bays/coastal waters monitored nationwide (1996-2003) • Parameters measured: • DO (dissolved oxygen) • BOD (bio-chemical oxygen demand) • pH • Temperature

  3. BACKGROUND • Part of the advocacy for good water quality • Beach Eco-Watch - priority program/activity of the DENR for 2004 • 57 major beaches identified/monitored since January,2004

  4. OBJECTIVE • Establish baseline data; • Provide updated information on the present quality of the bathing beaches; • Inform the mayor/owners to institute mitigating measures to prevent downgrading and improve the quality of their respective bathing beaches and the environs

  5. ACTIVITIES The monitoring program includes the following: • In-situ measurements of pH, Temperature, Dissolved Oxygen • Sample collection for Total and Fecal Coliform (TC/FC) analyses • Sample preservation • Physical observation of the surroundings which may affect the quality of the bathing beaches • Analyses

  6. 1996-2003 A TOTAL OF 31 BAYS WERE MONITORED NATIONWIDE FOR DO from 1996-2003

  7. RANGES OF DO CONCENTRATION OF BAYS/COASTAL WATERS(1996-2003)

  8. Class SB • areas regularly used by the public for bathing, swimming, skin diving, etc. • spawning areas for Chanos chanos or “bangus” and similar species • Class SB criteria: • TC = 1000 MPN/100ml • FC = 200 MPN/100ml • DO = >5 mg/L

  20. Total and Fecal Coliform Counts of Bathing Water in Manila Bay for CY 2003 2 stations passed & 12 failed the criteria for SB waters.
