Writing Test Design for 2010 Testing only 4th and 7th graders 2 Student Writing Samples with 8 multiple choice items 16 points 1 Peer Response to Student Writing Sample 4 points 1 Narrative Writing Constructed Response 15 points 1 Informational Writing Constructed Response 15 points TOTAL: 50 points

  4. NarrativeWriting (GLCE: GN.03.01 or GN.06.01) Similar to Writing from Knowledge & Experience prompts used from 2005-2008 Directed to: Write a story about a given topic. Options limited to two with “write about XXX in your own way” Two pages provided (one page Notes/Planning)

Informational Writing (GLCE: GN.03.03 or GN. 06.02) Assess informational writing using various organizational patterns (descriptive, enumerative, sequence, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) For 2010: Grade 4: comparison Grade 7: cause/effect Two pages provided (one page Notes/Planning)

  8. Example of Comparison Prompt 4th Grade Fruits and vegetables are healthy foods. Compare two fruits or vegetables like apples and oranges.

  9. Example of Cause/Effect Prompt 7th Grade Watching television is a popular pastime. What effect can watching television have on study habits?

  10. Peer Response to SWS (GLCE: PR.03.04 or PR.06.03) Standardized question: What could the writer do to improve this sample? Two pages provided (one page Notes/Planning)

  11. Peer Response to SWS Rubric • 4 point holistic rubric • Recommendations for improvement • Relevant, specific examples/details from sample to support recommendation • Explanation of why the recommendation improves the sample

  13. Schedule • Need to field test items during operational testing window • Two days needed to complete assessment • Day 1 on Thursday, October 14 • Day 2 on Wednesday, October 20

  14. Tips • Writing is a continual process and fluency is developed only if it occurs every single day. • Students needs to begin writing in Kdg. • Writing needs be taught at every grade level and in every content area.
