Defining GP boundaries in Sheffield • Investment in 1:10 000 Scale Raster will ensure that the entire Sheffield population will be better covered by GP practices. • General Medical Services (GMS) contracts, introduced in April 2004, require that GP practices agree a catchment area with their Primary Care Trust. The Sheffield Health Informatics Service invested in 1:10 000 scale mapping to define GP boundaries in Sheffield. As populations change over time, this initial exercise ensures that boundaries may be continually managed so that resources are targeted to meet patient needs. • ‘We could not have done this exercise without 1:10K mapping.’ Chris Knee, Senior Information Analyst, Health Informatics Service
