  2. In comparing comprehensive sex education and abstinence only education, comprehensive sex education is the better choice.

  3. Abstinence Only Education: • Is a class that teaches students to refrain from sex until marriage, excluding information about how to have safe sex, contraceptive uses, the emotional impact, and the benefits of getting tested.

  4. Comprehensive Sex Education • A class that teaches abstinence as the first choice, but includes information about contraceptive usage, emotional risks, the consequences, and how to have safe sex.

  5. Statistics • Before 2006, pregnancy rates had been declining, however in 2006, at the peak of Bush’s abstinence only program, teen pregnancy rates actually began to increase (Guttmatcher Institute)

Statistics • According to a study performed by University of Pennsylvania, in comparing a group of teenagers taught abstinence only, against a group of teenagers taught comprehensive sex ed, those who learned abstinence only did delay sex, but when they became sexually active were less likely than those who were taught comprehensive sex ed. to get tested for STDs

  7. Statistics • According to government data, in 1996 Congress gave $250 million to state school to teach abstinence only, all states participated except California who already tried this method. The program was terminated though because it was found ineffective Abstinence only

  8. Statistics • One in four teens have an STD (Center for Disease Control) • By the age of nineteen, 70% of teens have had sexual intercourse (Guttmacher Institute) • 25% of teens do not receive information about birth control from parents or school (Guttmacher Institute)

Why Comprehensive Education is the best option • It pushes abstinence first • Gives teenagers options • Teaches them in depth about sex and the risks • It is shown to be safer • Does not encourage sexual activity, but instead educates teenagers about it • Teaches teenagers what to do should they chose to become sexually active
