2013 – 2014 Florida Governor Matthew Cantrell’s “STEPS TO EXCELLENCE” ACTIVITIES APRIL 24TH MEETING INVOCATION SPEAKER Heavenly Father, Remind us that God judges a person by measuring the heart instead of the head. Let us not grow smug and self-righteous because we attend religious services each week. Make us realize we must extend a helping hand to those of Your children who are ill, lonely, hungry, or lost. And now bless this food to our use and us to Your service. Amen Sam Kouvaris Director of Sports Information for WJXT, Channel 4 Sam’s presentation focused on local sports and much on the Jaguars and Kahn's leadership. The examples given emphasized the importance of leadership focused on personal excellence and the ability to create a team attitude that generates a group drive towards bettering the team--going beyond self improvement and building the best team you can create. Thank you, Sam, for another interesting and informative talk. From: “Invocations for Kiwanis Occasions” by James J. Spring Word Scramble KIWANIS EDUCATION May 15, Thursday - Charity Wine Tasting at Table 1 Restaurant in Ponte Vedra, Chance to win prizes and make donations to help our charities, 5:30pm-7pm July 17 – 20 International Convention, Japan The first Kiwanis club was organized in Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A., in 1914. The group received a charter from the state of Michigan on January 21, 1915 – the day that is regarded as the birth date of Kiwanis. The founding club’s name is Detroit Kiwanis Club No. 1 in recognition of its heritage. The name “Kiwanis” was coined from an expression of the American Indians in the Detroit area, which was found in Bishop Baraga’s dictionary of the Otchipew language. The expression “NuncKee-wan-nis” meant, broadly, “we trade”, or “we share our talents.” As a coined word, however, “Kiwanis” has no meaning except as the name of a leading international service club.
