Who We Are • A diverse, student led, non-profit organization Project Suyana aims to assimilate students from all areas of the undergraduate and graduate colleges who share a deeply rooted interest in medicine and global health care. Students will collaborate throughout the 2007-2008 school year to attain the appropriate financial and medical resources that would assist in the project’s success while gaining a first hand experience in global health.

  5. Why Puno? • In all of Peru, Puno is recognized for being a region that is severely afflicted with maternal and infant mortality rates • On the outskirts of the central district of Puno, husbands and women from the community deliver the infants • Infant death rate: 40 of every 1000 live births • Maternal death rate: 200 of every 100,000 births -World Health Organization, Peru

  6. Short -term Goals • Construction of Casa de Estar • Construction of a local clinic in Parcacolla, outskirt of Puno • Public Health Awareness program for local residents • English education programs for children and healthcare workers

  7. Long-term Goals • Expand healthcare availability and resources to the remote areas of Puno • Create a long standing Public Health Awareness program that could be utilized by local public and social workers in both central and outskirt Puno • Create a community library as a subset of the local clinic and/or Casa de Estar • Establish a English language learning program

  8. Available Projects • English educational curricula for school children and hospital staff • Public Health programs • Photovoice • Awareness programs • OB/GYN • Nutrition, sanitation • Construction and expansion of Casa de Estar We welcome all new ideas for potential projects!

For Traveling Members • Shadow and assist physicians in various areas • Surgery (abdominal, trauma, urology, thoracic) • Pediatrics (neonatology) • Obstetrics and Gynecology • Dentistry • Emergency and Internal Medicine • English teaching experience • Public Health research and education • Opportunity to improve and perfect Spanish
