  1. Project Suyana Peru Humanitarian Aid Trip

Who We Are A diverse, student-led, non-profit organization Project Suyana aims to assimilate students from all areas of the undergraduate and graduate colleges who share a deeply rooted interest in medicine and global health care. Students will collaborate throughout the 2007-2008 school year to attain the appropriate financial and medical resources that would assist in the project’s success while gaining a first hand experience in global health.

Maternal Health in Need • Infant death rate: 53.1 of every 1000 live births • Maternal death rate: 200 of every 100,000 births -World Health Organization, Peru • In the capital, Lima, Peru there are approximately 12-15 physicians per 10,000 inhabitants. • In Puno, Peru, approximately 4-6 physicians are available per 10,000 inhabitants. -Ministry of Health, Puno Peru 2006

Long Term Project Goals • Construction of Casa de Espera – make it an affiliate branch of the Central Hospital. • Create a long standing Public Health Awareness program that could be utilized by local public and social workers in both urban and rural regions of Puno. • Establish a stronger English curriculum within local public schools and orphanages.

Trip Overview • Set up a week long free health clinic screening • Connection to land and population • The sky is the limit! • Health screening in rural Puno • Distribution of year-round clinical supply collection • Rounding with physicians • Surgery (abdominal, trauma, urology, thoracic) • Pediatrics (neonatology) • Obstetrics and Gynecology • Emergency and Family Medicine • Also available in the summer: • Public health programs • English education for grade-school students and hospital staff
