IRP approach - Uncertainty • Inherently planning has to deal with uncertainty on a number of fronts: • Cost assumptions for generic options • Moving from generic options to realisable projects (local issues) • Expectations of: • Future demand • Fuel prices • Resource availability • Implementation constraints
IRP approach – Variable generation Variable generation has an impact on the security of supply of the electricity system, specifically the predictability and stability of supply. Alternative back-up generation or storage may be required with significant penetration of variable technologies.
IRP approach – Distributed generation The interaction of generation and transmission expansion… Considering cost of network expansion against new generation options, especially in currently unconnected areas
IRP approach – DSM and Energy efficiency Designed interventions in demand-side management could provide benefits in displacing future generation as well as carbon abatement potential. Certain DSM could be related to load-shifting (options available to a utility or system operator) or energy efficiency.
