  1. AGR 3102PRINCIPLES OF WEED SCIENCE UNIT 3 WEED AND HUMAN: BENEFICIAL OF WEEDS

  2. Benefits of weeds??? Amongst are: • Stabilizing & adding organic matter to soils – dead weed plants can become compost, fertilizer, mulching agent. • Providing habitat and feed for wildlife (i.e. nectar for bees). • Agronomical value: prevent soil erosion, nutrient (N2) fixation and retention, i.e. creeping legume weeds as groundcover crops: Mimosa spp., Asystasia spp. Centrosemapubescens, Calopogoniummucunoides.

  3. Used as groundcover crops

  4. Ornamental purposes/aesthetic qualities – some weeds produce beautiful flowers: water hyacinth. Landscape plants: Acacia spp. and Lantana camara.

  5. Turfgrass: Cynodondactylon, Axonopus spp., Paspalum spp. – Turfgrass Science (Prof. Abdul ShukorJuraimi).

  6. Employment opportunities.

  7. Products for human consumption: Limnocharis flava, maman (Cleome gynandar, C. pentaphylla), fern-pucuk paku.

  8. Medicinal use: senduduk(Melastomamalabathricum),dukunganak (Phyllantus spp.), rumputjarummas (Strigaasiatica), L. camara; Vernoniacinerea (Barreto F. et al. 2010. J. Young Pharm 1;2(1):42-44; Leelarungrayub et al. 2010. J. International Society of Sports Nutrition 2010, 7:21). http://www.globinmed.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=79342:dukung-anak&catid=791:d http://www.wildsingapore.com/wildfacts/plants/others/melastoma/malabathricum.htm

  9. Biofuel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Some can potentially become pasture crops (forage) or fodder (hay, silage) for animals, i.e. Paspalum spp., Digitaria spp. Cynodon dactylon – Pasture Management (Dr. Ridwan Halim). • Biological resource: germaplasm for medicinal use or a genetic reservoir for improved crops. “taking advantage of their presence”
