Transport and Confinement Goals and Agenda for Milan ITPA MeetingS. Kaye, 10/08 • Newly formed T&C ITPA group a combination of old TP and CDBM groups • Important to wrap up work in existing JEXs and develop plans for future Joint Activities (expt/analysis/theory) • Problematic: ~ 15 JEXs from two groups • Need to close some out, develop proposals for continuing some, develop proposals for new ones • 1-2 per major topic (?) • Need to prioritize JAs • Ones addressing ITER urgent needs are highest • Not exclusive, however
ITER Needs to Prioritize Their Urgent (2 year timescale) Needs • L-H Threshold • In ITER-like conditions • Power required for Type III & Type I ELMs, EDA, etc • Requirements during ramp up/down phases • Species dependence in all above scenarios • Transport during transient phases – model development and validation • Ramp-up, ramp-down, steady-state • Electron transport • L-H, H-L ITB, IDB, ……. • Particle transport and fueling, peaked density control • Collisionality • Impurity accumulation • Develop and validate theory models
The Goal of This Meeting is to Identify a Manageable Number of Tasks to Pursue • Schedule is full, with many talks • First meeting of combined groups • Tried to avoid scheduling parallel sessions • Talks are ~15 min, should focus on motivation, highlights, expt-theory comparisons • Do not want a repeat of IAEA talks • Should be 5-7 vgs ideally, leaving time for discussion • How can theories be tested experimentally (and vice-versa)? • Group discussion time limited within session • Spill over into following session (in parallel) • Develop JAs that address ITER urgent needs (and other ITPA priorities) • Should not be open-ended • Should pursue underlying physics, not just empirical results
Chair of ITPA (R. Stambaugh) Has Asked Us to Discuss Publication of Joint Work • Nuclear Fusion desires to publish more ITPA papers • Willing to make the publication process as straightforward as possible • Three possible routes • Publishing fairly new material that is emerging physics • Emerging results for “fast-track” publication (even if not mature) • Publishing finished ITPA studies as regular papers in NF through the regular submission process • Mature, validated analysis; would represent ~2 years of work • Publishing perhaps every two years in an entire issue devoted to ITPA papers • Paper preparation as in (2), but with fixed target date
Agenda • Continue discussion • Mon • AM Opening, Global DBs and CDB JEX • PM Particle transport • Tues • AM Rotation and momentum transport • PM R&MT (cont’d), L-H physics • Wed • AM Core transport and modeling • PM TP JEX and closing • Cancelled • McDonald (Two-term scaling) – Mon. AM • Bourdelle (Impurity transport) – Mon. PM
Next Meeting • Joint with Integrated Operating Scenarios TG • Joint discussion of modeling and model validation efforts • Naka • Tues – Fri, March 31 – April 3, 2008 • Possibly only 3 days • Keep fingers crossed for cherry blossoms
