SOLAR ENERGY SOLAR WATER HEATING. HARVESTING THE SUN POWER TO YOUR ADVANTAGE.
MIKE SIMMONDS INSTALLATION MIKE’S BIG HOUSE NEEDED TWO COLLECTERS. WHY?
HEATING WATER COSTS IT NEEDS 1.163 WATTS TO HEAT 1 LITRE OF WATER THROUGH 1 DEGREE CENTIGRADE. THEREFORE IT COSTS 8 CENTS TO BOIL THE WATER FOR, 4 CUPS OF TEA OR 3 MUGS OF COFFEE. IF WE MULTIPLY THIS AMOUNT UP , IT MEANS THAT IT COSTS R7.12 TO HEAT A 150 LITRE GEYSER ONCE.
Arrie de Klerk’s Installation. Rammron Lane. Near the Pinks and the Wrights.
FINISHED INSTALLATION. Mike Hulse, Kwawula.
HOW IT WORKS • (1) THE PLUMBING AND SOLAR PUMP. • (2) CONTROL PANEL. • (3) SAVINGS. • (4) THE COST. • (5) INVESTMENT.
CONTROL PANEL THIS DEVICE IS A TIMER AND THERMOSTAT THAT COTROLS THE ELEMENT IN THE GEYSER.
HEAT LOSSES • To get SABS approval a 150 litre geyser may lose 2.5Kw of heat. The first metre of 22mm copper piping attached to each side of geyser will lose 55w of heat constantly, when the temperature differential is 60 degrees, until your geyser gets cold. That is the same amount of power as having a 100w bulb burning in your ceiling space 24 hours a day. • Geyser heat loss 2.5Kw X 1.16 X 87 cents = R2.52 • Piping heat loss 180w X 1.16 x 12 X 87cents = R2.18 • Totally unused, the geyser costs R4.70 per day in electricity. Therefore, R141.00 per month. This has to be maintained by using electricity, so you constantly have hot water. • This is why it is thought that a geyser accounts for about 40% of your account. • There are ways of mitigating these losses and heating water without using electricity and the most cost effective is converting your geyser into a solar geyser.
