What is Child Abuse? • physical, sexual or emotional maltreatment or neglect of a child • occur in a childrens home, in organizations, schools or communities the child interacts with
Neglect Neglect As a deficit in meeting a childrens basic needs Failure to provide basic physical health care, supervision, nutrition emotional nurturing, education or safe housing
Physical abuse • Non-accidental physical injury as a result of punching, biting, shaking, throwing, stabbing, choking, hitting, burning or otherwise harming a child • Inflicted by a parent, caregiver, or other person who has responsibility for the Child
Emotional abuse • Emotional abuse should be at the center of all forms of abuse • impairs a child’s emotional development or sense of self- worth
Emotional abuse • constant criticism, threats or rejection, as well as withholding love, support, or guidance • centerpiece of efforts to understand family functioning and to protect children
Sexual abuse • sexual activities, children don’t always realize what is happening • physical contact, including penetrative or non-penetrative acts • non-contact activities, such as involving children in looking at photographs, pornographic material for example
