Internet Usage & Privacy Policy • Has a summary of limitations and network use • An agreement not to waste/damage computer resources • “No expectation of privacy” statement • Has a disclaimer to warn employees of consequences of violations and to protect company from liability • Updated as technology changes • Sample Policy: Company computers, company files, the e-mail system, Internet access, and the software furnished to employees are company property and are to be used for business only, and not for personal use

Employee Rights • Counter snooping programs: SpyDetect • Supposed to inform employees of monitoring • Upon hiring, signing a contract/policy agreement, memos, training sessions, message upon boot-up • Video surveillance can’t film in changing/locker rooms, smoking areas, or even employees lounges- no audio • Public Sector has rights with search and seizure • Rights to personal belongings, privacy of mail, phone calls, and voicemail • Can join groups: • ACLU, National Work Rights Institute, Workplace Fairness

What the Courts Say… • In cases of employee v.s employer • Clearly and properly documented the policy • Pre-warned of consequences of violation • Disciplined all other employees the same • Respected basic rights • Serious of the violation • Basically…. • It’s their computers, their terminals, their resources, and their money that they give you to do your job.
