  1. Type 1 Diabetes No cure. No cause.

  2. What is type 1 diabetes? • Type 1 diabetes can occur at any age. However, it is most often diagnosed in children, adolescents, or young adults. • Insulin is a hormone produced by beta cells, in the pancreas. Insulin is needed to move blood sugar (glucose) into cells, where it is stored and used for energy. When the beta cells produce little or no insulin, type 1 diabetes emerges.

  3. Signs and Symptoms • Being very thirsty • Feeling hungry • Feeling tired • Having blurry eyesight • Losing the feeling or feeling tingling in your feet • Losing weight without trying • Urinating more often • Deep, rapid breathing • Dry skin and mouth • Flushed face • Fruity breath odor • Nausea or vomiting, inability to keep down fluids • Stomach pain • Headache • Hunger • Nervousness • Rapid heartbeat (palpitations) • Shaking • Sweating • Weakness

  4. The cause: • The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown. • Most likely it is an autoimmune disorder. • An infection or some other trigger causes the body to mistakenly attack the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. • Can be passed down through families.

  5. Treatments / Remedy: • Blood Test • Every day, a person suffering from type 1 diabetes must test their blood sugar by using an at home test where they prick their finger and draw a small amount of blood for testing. • Insulin • Must have insulin injected every day. • Diet and Exercise • Snacking throughout the day and exercise helps regulate blood sugar.

  6. What to do as a teacher who has a diabetic child in the classroom: • Make sure they have their insulin • Look over what they eat throughout the day • Have snacks available for them that they are able to eat. • Make sure they don’t eat something bad for them. • Talk to the parents • They will help you and tell you what you should do to help their child.
