Almost all developed countries had agrarian past Interesting to see how they managed to Break-out Europe Americas Japan and the young tigers Russia and allies BRIC Nations Break-out Nations
One side of the issue • Most of their population was engaged in agriculture related activities • As they developed new activities in industry and services emerged • (How did they develop?) • Labour force moved to industry and services • (what were the push and pull forces?) • This happened because those who remained in agril produced enough food (at least as much food as before) • Movement of labour out of agriculture was with corrosponding increase in productivity • (Why this did not happen in India and other countries?)
Break-Out of Agriculture Trap Economic development is always and everywhere characterized by substantial reallocations of resources out of agriculture • Driven by productivity increases • A declining employment share of agriculture • key feature of economic development. • Its main drivers are: • (i) improvements in agricultural technology combined with release resources from agriculture (“labor push”), • (ii) improvements in industrial technology attract labor out of agriculture (“labor pull”).
Points to ponder • Employment outside agriculture • Firms in industry and services • Hire the labour for Nonagril goods and services (for domestic and foreign market) • Needs miraculous transformation • Economy- All aspects • Education
