Translating and Reflecting any graph I can graph a transformation of any graph accurately (shifting and translating)
Need more notes? www.seniormath.wikispaces.com This PowerPoint and some online help can be found on the webpage.
Shifting Left/Right Shift Up/Down Shift Outside the parentheses (the function/equation) Same sign Example y=|x|+2 shifts up 2 • Inside the parentheses (the function/equation) • Opposite sign • Example y=|x+2| shift 2 left
Reflecting Over the x-axis Over the y-axis Negative Inside the parentheses Example y=(-x) • Negative sign outside parentheses • Example y=-|x|
Example Equation Description Left 2 Reflect over x-axis Down 6
Beyond parent functions… We have only shifted and reflected parent functions, but we could transform ANY function (including a generic function we will call f(x) )
Consider the graph y=f(x) Write an equation shifted up 2, right 3
Consider the graph y=f(x) Graph the equation shifted up 2, right 3
Consider the graph y=f(x) Write an equation reflected over the x-axis
Consider the graph y=f(x) Graph the equation shifted up 2, right 3
