LAGUNA BEACH A Beautiful History
Located in sunny Southern California, Laguna Beach is known for its beautiful shores and year-round warm climate. The community of this coastline town is as varied as the art that is created along the shores. On the following pages we are going to uncover the history of Laguna Beach.
SETTLING IN Surrounded by rolling hills and a long stretch of beach, the territory has always been able to stay isolated from the hustle and bustle of urban development. The first people began settling in the 1870s, and in 1887 it was officially founded, but it wasn’t until 1927 when it was incorporated as the City of Laguna Beach.
ART The blue waves, the sandy beaches, the rolling hills, and the soaring bluffs called artists from far and wide by the early 1900s. It was inevitable that Laguna’s art colony would create a distinctive style branded “California Impressionism”. The first art gallery opened in 1918; it is now known as the Laguna Beach Art Museum.
PICTURESQUE Filmmakers, photographers, and writers were also inspired by Laguna’s scenery and community. Starting in the 1910s, dozens of silent films were shot in this quiet haven. Movie stars and starlets of the era were known for lounging around the town and mingling with its 300 residents while on breaks from their long productions.
GROWING For years, this small town existed in relative isolation, with Laguna Canyon Road being its only access. In 1926, the Pacific Coast Highway was completed and the population shot up to 1,900. By the time the 60s came around, Laguna Beach had quadrupled in area and had over 10,000 people.
NEW WAVES The culture of Laguna has always been very eclectic; people of all walks of life have been beckoned to this seaside city. In the late 60s, Laguna Beach became a focal point of California’s alternative scene. In the present day, Laguna Beach has a populace of 24,000, where bohemians and creative people live alongside the wealthy.
A CLIMATE FOR FUN & RELAXATION It’s not hard to see why so many people flock to these shores. Laguna Beach has a mild Mediterranean climate, clear skies year-round, a low annual precipitation level, and the water ranges between 60 F in February to 75 F in September.
