  1. WARM-UP 1. Gayle sold $94.69 worth of books on Tuesday, and $63.14 worth of books on Wednesday. Gayle sold only $34.84 worth of books on Thursday. How much more did Gayle make on Tuesday than she did on Thursday? 2. Marcos sold 12 magazine subscriptions for $28 each. How much money did he collect for all of the magazine subscriptions?

FACTOR-GREATEST COMMON FACTOR • What is a factor? • A factor is what a number is made of (the parts). • The numbers you multiply to get another number are factors. • Example: 2 and 6 are factors of 12. • What are other factors of 12? • 1, 3, 4, and 12 • The GCF is the LARGEST factor two numbers have in common.

  6. DIVISOR • The number that will divide into another number • EX: 3l412 3 is the divisor

  7. PROPER FACTORS • The proper factors of a number are all the factors of that number, except the number itself. For example, the proper factors of 12 are 1,2,3,4, and 6. Although 12 is a factor of itself, it is not a proper factor.

  8. GAME TIME! We are going to play a game with partners to demonstrate understanding of factors. I will play the first game with you, to show you how the game should be played.

  9. EXPLORE As you play the game, think about these questions: • Is it better to go first or second? • What is the best first move? Why? • How do you know when the game is over? • How do you know when you have found all the factors of a number?

He wants to display them in rows with the same number of seedlings in each row with no mixing of rows. • What is the greatest number of seedlings that he could put in each row? • How many rows of each tree seedlings will there be? GCF = 16 Fir: 2, cedar: 3, maple: 5

  17. PROBLEM SUMMARY What do you think is a good strategy for playing the Factor Game? Here are Cam’s and Liza’s strategies: CAM: “Bigger numbers must have more factors than smaller number, so I always try to circle small numbers so my opponent won’t get very many points.” LIZA: “Some numbers don’t have any factors except one and themselves. I try to choose those numbers so my opponent only gets one point. Do you think their strategies are good ones? Why?
