  1. LAUNCHING A LEGACY SOCIETY Amy Amason, Diocese of Atlanta Charles Gearing, Diocese of Atlanta Jim Murphy, ECF June 7, 2014

  2. Launching a Legacy Society What is a legacy society? • An organization comprised of persons who have made a legacy gift or commitment to the Church • They have provided some documentation of the commitment • The commitment may include organizations of the Church other than the parish • Size of gift does not matter

  3. Why create one? • Time between commitment and gift • Help donors stay connected and content with commitment • Thank donors often • Raise awareness of gift planning program

  4. How do we start? • Form a steering committee • Opportunity to get different people involved • Vocational skills and gifts useful • Creativity more important than technical knowledge

  5. First Step – An Enrollment Form • Makes it simple to provide information • Clarifies membership requirements • Records permission for listing donor names

  6. Second Step – A Descriptive Brochure • Describes what the legacy society is • Clarifies benefits of membership • Provides basic planned giving information • Describes endowment structure and its administration

  7. Some Questions To Resolve • What constitutes a qualifying gift? • When to ask? Type? Amount? • Clarify a “legacy” vs. a “memorial” gift • Who is a founding member? • What form of plaque or display? • Give memento or gift to members?

  8. Preparing for “going public” • Set future date for dedication to encourage founding members • Each leader (clergy and lay) should commit to be a founding member • Participation from every leadership group • Provides momentum for program start-up

  9. Getting The Program Started • Initial focus and energy on planning a very nice dedication event • Promote a goal for “founding members” • Celebrate the milestone achieved • Present gifts to the “founding members” • Bless and dedicate the plaque or display

  10. Maintaining The Program • Plan an event at least annually to honor and thank members (new & old) • Present memento to new members • Invite guests and others if possible • Take advantage of “photo ops”

  11. Organize An Educational Program • Face-to-face or public witness is most effective • One-liners in service bulletins • Offer end-of-life planning events • Adult education Sunday classes • Emphasize milestones/anniversaries • Occasional mailings

  12. Overview: • Independent and lay-led foundation • ECF’s mission is to strengthen the leadership and financial capabilities of Episcopal congregations, dioceses, and other institutions • ECF carries out this mission through a wide array of programs including… What is the Episcopal Church Foundation (ECF)? • Leadership Resources • ECF Vital Practices (ecfvp.org) • Vestry Resource Guide • Fellowship Partners Program • Educational Events • Vital Teams • Financial Resources • Capital Campaigns • Planned Giving • Endowment Management • Educational Events
