James K. Polk – Manifest Destiny President Polk was determined to get California and New Mexico territories From Mexico. – What would this give us? Mexico refused to Sell us this land. Also, Mexico had never recognized the independence of Texas.
The Texas- Mexico border was in dispute. Rio Grande or Nueces River? Polk sent an agent to propose a deal. $30,000,00 for the acceptance of the Rio Grande
Mexico refused and vowed to regain Texas. • Polk ordered General Zachary Taylor to build a fort between the Nueces River and the Rio Grande. • Mexico attacked and on May 11, 1846 Congress passed a declaration of war against Mexico.
Three part war plan • Drive Mexico out of the disputed border. 2) The United States would seize New Mexico and California. 3) American forces would take Mexico City.
The United States was successful with their war plan. Who is this man? The USA lost 1721 men to battle and over 11,000 to disease. Mexico’s losses were far greater. The war cost the United States $100,000,000. However Mexico lost more – half its’ territory
End of the Mexican War • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed. – Mexico gave up California, New Mexcio and agreed to the Rio Grande border. The United States gave $15,000,000 • Gadsden Purchase the United States mainland reached its present size for an additional $10,000,000.
California and Utah Gold Rush and Religion
James Marshall work for John Sutter and made a discovery. “I reached down and picked it up”, “It made my heart thump, for I was certain it was gold.”
California gold rush doubled the world’s supply of gold. A Jewish immigrant named LEVI STRAUSS sold the miners sturdy pants made of denim. His “Levis” made him rich.
Supply and Demand - Gold Rush Before the discovery of gold a metal pan at Sutters’ Mill sold for .20. After the gold was found it sold for $15.00. Many miners were forced to pay $1, $5, even the outrageous $100 for a glass of water. • That’s an expensive drink

Neighbors disapproved in New York, Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois. Finally in Illinois a mob killed Joseph Smith in 1844.
Brigham Young Brigham Young took over as head of the Mormons. Young decided to move again, this time to the Great Salt Lake in present-day Utah.
