Overview of Project PROJECT PURPOSE: To build research capacity and information sharing network that will execute joint research and deliver publications in order to inform Pro-Poor Tourism policy debates in East Africa and the wider global community.
Project Objectives • Share experiences plans and strategies for enhancing Pro-Poor Tourism (PPT) • Create awareness on PPT in East Africa • Strengthen capacity of networking between partner universities • Develop links with private sector, practitioners, government and donor agencies • Develop common research agenda
How to achieve goals and objectives • Build Capacity • Workshops • Research • Post graduate students (PhD) – females encouraged • Information Sharing • Networking • Research links (NGOS,Public/private sectors etc). • Joint publications • Use of seminars • Use of the websites • Inform Pro-poor Tourism Policy debates • East Africa • Globally
Roles of Partners • Active participation in:- • Identification of research agenda • Conducting joint research – tailor made • Publication and Dissemination • Supervision/mentoring of PhD students • Capacity building seminars • Sourcing for other funding agencies
Project Outputs/ Achievements • Inaugural partners workshop held in Kampala Uganda 2008 • 1 registered PhD from Uganda on project • 2 PhD students (1 from Kenya and another from Tanzania) identified and on project - writing proposals • 3 above mentioned students conducted joint and supervised research in Uganda – June 2009 • All partners attended ATLAS conference in Botswana 1-3 July 2009 • Project website set up – www.propoortourism-ea.org • Collaboration with other projects – 3A-STEP (Edulink), Tourism Competitiveness (SCOTHEE – DelPHE), EPA • Current 2nd workshop in Kigali bringing together stakeholders
Expected Outputs • Presentation of ongoing PG research • Analysis of what various stakeholders are doing to provide more benefits to the poor • Propose practical solutions to increase research and benefits to the poor • PPT research agenda setting • Increased cooperation and networking among stakeholders
