  7. Phonics • Read Write Incphonics will continue for your child in Year 1. • Organised and run by Miss Orr. • Miss Orr has assessed all of the children to organise which groups they will be in for September. • The groups are based on your child’s phonic ability. • There is a phonics screening check that takes place for all Year 1 children across the UK in June. The results will be fed back in your child’s report.

  8. The outdoor environment • Directly outside Oak, Elm and Rowan classes there is a gated and secure area for the children to use as part of their curriculum. It will be used as an area where the children can do gardening, play games, use the sand and water and much more. • It mirrors the activities that the children will have experienced in the Foundation stage. • This area will be used during child initiated learning and will enable the children from Oak Elm and Rowan to play together on the small playground.

  9. Resources • All of the classes will have the adequate resources and have been fully adapted to suit Year one children. • The classes will mirror the foundation stage to begin with and gradually become more formalised.

  10. Themes over the year • In September your child's theme will be Ourselves. • We will communicate the rest of the themes with you at the ‘Meet the teacher’ evening in September and give you a copy so that you know what your child will be learning over the year. • Some of our previous themes have been celebrations, water, growing plants, animals, spring time, machines. • We link as much of our learning in all subjects to our themes.

  11. Educational visits throughout the year • We have previously been on visits to the theatre, trips to the park linked with forces in science, a visit to the church, the sports centre and Whipsnade Zoo. • On the 19th December we have booked a trip to the Elgiva theatre in Chesham to see The Wizard of Oz.
