Welcome Students! Geriatric Clerkship Orientation
How do I read my schedule? • Students are listed in alphabetical order and are paired with a primary preceptor. • Unless otherwise specified, you will be with your preceptor at all locations, except when scheduled at a community partner location. • The 1st week of your rotation is on the left and the 2nd week is on the right. • Each day is broken down into AM and PM. • The Workshop schedule is listed at the end. • Last minute schedule changes will be sent to you via text page and email.
What are all the abbreviations? • DVOC: Dogwood Village of Orange County • WCBR: Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge • HS: Health South • NH: Nursing Home • CC: Colonnades Clinic • JABA: Jefferson Area Board on Aging • CHR: Charlottesville Health & Rehab • Project: This is time “off” for you to work on your final presentation that you will present at Wrap Up.
What is the difference? • JABA Clinic: Our Geriatric Clinic is located at Hillsdale Drive. • You will meet with either your preceptor OR another geriatric faculty member who will be listed on your schedule. • JABA Senior Centers: These are community centers located in the following counties: Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson. • Your preceptor will NOT be at these locations. • These centers will give you an opportunity to interact with geriatric patients and nursing staff in a community center setting. • Palliative Clinic: Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center • Wed/Thurs.: 3rd Floor, Fri.: Ground Floor (Radiation Oncology) • Palliative Consults: Meets in Main Hospital, 3 East Conf. Room (near nursing station) Page: 1539 the day prior. If Dr. Blackhall is assigned, please page her at 4591 Rounds begin at 9am.

Oasis Evaluations • Very important: Be sure to enter your evaluators into Oasis. You need to have at least 3. Your primary preceptor should be one of them. • If you don’t have 3, you may list Dr. Cheng. • If you do not enter your evaluators, the system will not alert Dr. Cheng to complete your grade.
Assignments • Please review the website under the Learning Materials Tab: http://www.medicine.virginia.edu/clinical/departments/medicine/education/geri/learning-materials
Exam (online) • You will be emailed the link to the exam. • Exam begins promptly at 8:00am. • You will have 45 minutes to complete the exam. • The exam has 20 multiple choice questions. • Remember your on your honor. “On my honor, I pledge that I have neither given nor received help on this assignment."
Wrap Up • Please arrive promptly at 9:00am. • Bring a copy of your presentation handout, Oasis Contact Sheet (if you’d like for me to hold on to it for you), and copy of Away From Her, if you have one. • Please remember to complete your requirement checklist and enter your evaluators.
Presentations • Your presentation must be in .ppt format. • When you save your presentation, click on “Save As” and under File Name, there is a drop down box that says “Save as Type”. Choose something that is .ppt. • Bring a copy of the handouts of your presentation for Dr. Cheng and please email Karen Ward (krw5v@virginia.edu) your final presentations so she can upload them for you.
