Engine oil serves to cool, clean and lubricate all the internal moving parts of the engine like piston pin, cylinder walls, valves, cylinder rings, crankcase and gear train. These must be kept oiled to keep the vehicle running smoothly and effectively on the roads. Engine parts when well-oiled will run smoothly, and hence make the engine run better and increase its life too. Without oil, engine will quickly deteriorate as overheating, grim and continual friction will wear down or damage parts, clog hoses and erode valves etc.

How to care of your engine? Engine oil serves to cool, clean and lubricate all the internal moving parts of the engine like piston pin, cylinder walls, valves, cylinder rings, crankcase and gear train. These must be kept oiled to keep the vehicle running smoothly and effectively on the roads. Engine parts when well-oiled will run smoothly, and hence make the engine run better and increase its life too. Without oil, engine will quickly deteriorate as overheating, grim and continual friction will wear down or damage parts, clog hoses and erode valves etc.
Removing dirt and filth Oil helps in reducing friction and eradicates all dirt and debris from the engine. It keeps significant parts of the engine in proper shape, protects them from burning in hot emission and also improves the performance of the engine.
Engine lubrication system The process of lubrication in an internal combustion engine starts in the sump, also known as oil pan. From here, oil is dragged through a strainer by the oil pump to remove a number of contaminants from the mass of fluid. After that, the oil goes through the oil filter.
Component of engine lubrication system Oil pan or sump It is attached to the bottom part of the crankcase in an internal combustion engine. It stores the engine’s lubrication oil and circulates it to the lubrication system. It gathers oil from the sides of the crankcase walls. A drain plug is placed at the bottom level in the sump for easy drainage of used oil.
Oil filter It’s a vital part of the oiling system of an internal combustion engine. The filter takes dirty oil and eradicates particulates and mental flakes from the oil. Oil filter is used for smooth functioning of the hydraulic machinery.
Oil pump It circulates the engine oil to the bearings, camshaft and pistons of the engine. Due to high pressure, the pump forces the oil out and lubricates the bearings while it assists in cooling the engine. Oil pumps come in a variety of types such as gear pump, vane pump, trochoid pump and plunger pump.
Pickup tube It is placed between the oil sump and oil plump with a flat cup and a wire mesh strainer which is immersed in the oil. The tube pulls oil from the oil sump through suction of the oil pump and atmospheric pressure. A strainer on this tube stops large particles of debris and dirt from entering into the oil pump and protects it from damage.
Pressure relief valve It’s a safety device designed to protect a pressurized vessel or system during the overpressure event. An overpressure event is a condition that causes pressure in a vessel or system to increase beyond the specified design or MAWP (maximum allowable working pressure).
Spurt holes and galleries Pistons, pins and rings are lubricated by oil thrown onto the cylinder walls from the connecting rod bearings. Some connecting rods have oil spurt holes which are placed to receive oil from similar holes in the crankshaft. Oil then spurts out at a point in the engine cycle when main area of the cylinder wall opens. The oil sprays connecting rod and lubricates the cylinder walls and piston wrist pin that help to cool down the bottom of the piston.
