Verb • A word conveying an action (finite) or state of being (non-finite) • Examples of finite verbs: • Ran, drive, demolish, snore, yell • Examples of non-finite verbs: • Were, are, am
Articles • Combines with a noun to indicate the reference being made by the noun • Examples of articles: A, An, The
Adjective • Adjectives modify or describe a noun. • Examples of Adjectives: • Tall, Dark, Handsome
Adverb • Adverbs describe or modify a verb • Examples of Adverbs: • Quickly, Beautifully, Gracefully
Direct Object • DIRECT receiver of an action in a sentence • Example: • Sean ate the cupcake. • Cupcake is the direct object because it is the receiver of the verb ATE.
Indirect Object • Identifies to whom or for whom or what the action is being performed. • Example: • Shelby sent Kait a letter. • In this sentence, Kait is the Indirect Object because she is being sent the letter by Shelby (the subject).
Preposition • Describes a relationship between words in a sentence • Examples: • About, About, On, Around, Before, Below, Down, Out
Pronouns • Generally (but not always) pronouns stand for (pro + noun) or refer to a noun, an individual or individuals or thing or things whose identity is made clear earlier in the text. • Examples: • He, She, It, They
Subject • The person, place or thing in a sentence that is doing something (the action-the verb). • Example: • Frankie slept on the couch. • In this sentence, Frankie is the subject because he is performing the action (slept).
