  2. Lesson 4 – Jesus’ Genealogy 3:23-38 • Luke’s record differs from Matthew’s • Matthew’s = the legal (royal) lineage • All descendants from Abraham • All kings in Judah from David • This would prove Jesus to be the “legal” heir to David’s throne cp. 2 Sam 7:12, 16

  3. Lesson 4 – Jesus’ Genealogy 3:23-38 • Luke’s record differs from Matthew’s • Luke’s = the physical lineage • All descendants from Adam • This would prove Jesus to actually be from the family of David

  4. Lesson 4 – Jesus’ Genealogy 3:23-38 • Luke’s record differs from Matthew’s • Matthew charts Joseph…Luke charts Mary • Joseph was not the father Mt 1:16 Lk 3:23 • Therefore, Luke’s lineage is the only record that satisfies the claim made in Rom 1:3

  5. Lesson 5 – Jesus’ Temptations 4:1-13 • Immediately after His baptism, Jesus was tempted by the devil cp. Mk 1:12 • Temptations = very “enticing” vv. 2-3 • His response each time is our example when we are tempted…“It is written”vv. 4, 8, 12

  7. Lesson 5 – Galilean Travels 4:14-44 In Nazarethvv. 16-30 • In His hometown synagogue, Jesus stood to read vv. 16-17 cp. Isa 61:1-2 • After reading, He applies what was read to Himself & His ministry vv. 21-27 • The crowd rejects Him vv. 28-30

  8. Lesson 5 – Galilean Travels 4:14-44 In Capernaumvv. 31-43 • The people were amazed at His teaching… He taught with authority v. 32 • While teaching in this synagogue, He cast a demon out of a man vv. 33-35 • His popularity begins to grow v. 37

  9. Lesson 5 – Galilean Travels 4:14-44 In Capernaumvv. 31-43 • He continued healing…Peter’s mother-in-law and many others throughout Galilee vv. 38-41 • The people sought Him for the miracles… Jesus emphasized His teaching vv. 42-44

  10. The events starting in Luke 5 begin a “new phase” in Jesus’ ministry… it is the start of the 2nd year of His public preaching Ù the “Year of Popularity.”

  11. Lesson 5 – Jesus’ 1st Disciples 5:1-11 • The first ones Jesus calls were already disciples of John Jn 1:35-42 • Jesus impresses them re: fish vv. 4-10 • They had been fishing all night…nothing v. 5 • At His command, they catch a “haul” vv. 6-7 • “You’ll catch men from now on”v. 10

  12. Lesson 5 – More Healing 5:12-26 • A leper is healed vv. 12-16 • Jesus instructs him to go show himself to the priest v. 14 cp. Lev 13-14 • Significant…Jesus always emphasized the importance of the Law of Moses • His popularity continues to grow vv. 15-16

  13. Lesson 5 – More Healing 5:12-26 • A paralytic is healed vv. 17-26 • In Capernaum cp. Mk 2:1 • Pharisees & other Jewish teachers are present listening to Jesus teach v. 17 • A house full of people…the paralytic’s friends cannot get him near Jesus vv. 18-19a

  14. Lesson 5 – More Healing 5:12-26 • A paralytic is healed vv. 17-26 • They take the paralytic up on the roof, make an opening, and lower him down right in front of Jesus v. 19b • Jesus is impressed with their faith…forgives the paralytic’s sins v. 20

  15. Lesson 5 – More Healing 5:12-26 • A paralytic is healed vv. 17-26 • The Jews reason Jesus was blaspheming v. 21 • “Who can forgive sins but God alone?” • To prove He was not blaspheming (i.e. that He was God), He healed the paralytic vv. 22-25 • This also caused amazement v. 26 RIGHT
