  3. Pregunta: What verb conjugations did we use for all Formal Commands? Subjunctive conjugations Note: Negativetú commands will also use subjunctive conjugations. But informal affirmative commands are going to be different!

  4. Formal Commands As mentioned, formal commands are based on subjunctive forms. Notice the following chart: Infinitive Subjunctive Formal commands Ud.   5. Pregunta: How do we make an affirmative command into a negative command? Just place “no” in front of the verb. This applies to both formal and informal commands.

  6. Formal Commands Negative commands are formed by placing no in front of the command form. No llegue tarde. Don’t arrive late. No asciendan a todos los empleados. Don’t promote all of the employees.

  8. For formal and informal commands: Object pronouns follow and are attached toaffirmative commands and precedenegative commands. Affirmative commands with pronouns attached require a written accent. ¡Váyase de aquí! Leave here! Tráiganmelo, por favor. Bring it to me, please. No se levante, señorita. Don’t get up, miss. No se lo den al jefe. Don’t give it to the boss.

  10. Tú Commands For regular affirmative commands . . . Think like él. The regular affirmative tú command has the same form as the él form of the verb in the present indicative.

  11. Tú Commands For regular affirmative commands . . . Él habla.  ¡Habla tú! He speaks. Speak! Él come.  ¡Come tú! He eats. Eat! Él escribe.  ¡Escribe tú! He writes. Write!

  12. Tú Commands For regular negative commands . . . Revert to the subjunctive. The negative tú command has the same form as the tú form of the verb in the present subjunctive.

  13. Tú Commands For regular negative commands . . . AffirmativeNegative ¡Habla! ¡No hables! Speak! Don’t speak! ¡Come! ¡No comas! Eat! Don’t eat! ¡Escribe! ¡No escribas! Write! Don’t write!

  14. Tú Commands Remember that all formal commands used the forms of the subjunctive. The informal (tú) commands, by contrast, use the subjunctive only in their negative forms. Notice the following chart. Infinitive Affirmative Negative (Subjunctive) comprar compra no compres (compres) comer come no comas (comas) escribir escribe no escribas (escribas) pensar piensa no pienses (pienses) dormir duerme no duermas (duermas) pedir pide no pidas (pidas) traer trae no traigas (traigas)

  15. Tú Commands Regular affirmative tú commands have the same form as the third-person singular of the present indicative. Recicla los platos de papel. Recycle the paper plates. Protege nuestros bosques. Protect our forests. Negative tú commands use the subjunctive. Don’t cut down the small trees. No cortes los árboles pequeños. No cierres la fábrica todavía. Don’t close the factory yet. Irregularities in the subjunctive will also appear in the negative tú commands. No conduzcas tan rápido. Don’t drive so fast. No te vayas. Don’t leave.

  17. Verbs with irregular affirmative forms Some sample sentences using irregular forms: No tengas miedo. Ten confianza. No vengas tarde. Ven a mi oficina. No te valgas del dinero. Val algo. No digas tonterías. Di la verdad. No salgas sin mí. Sal inmediatamente. No me hagas enojar. Haz la inspección. No te vayas. Ve a la reunión. No pongas esa cara. Pon el libro en la mesa. No seas grosero. Sé amable con todos.

  18. Object pronouns with tú commands As with the formal commands, attach pronouns to the end of affirmative commands and place them in front of the negative command. Remember to place an accent on the next-to-last syllable of the verb in the affirmative command form (not counting pronoun). Recíclala mañana. Recycle it tomorrow. No le pongas la multa a la estudiante. Don’t give the fine to the student.

  19. Object pronouns with tú commands The irregular affirmative command forms (except for sé) do not take a written accent unless more than one pronoun is added to the end of the verb. ¿La mesa? Sí, ponla por favor. The table? Yes, set it, please. Dime, ¿adónde vas? Tell me, where are you going? ¿Sabes su teléfono? Dímelo, por favor. Do you know his telephone number? Tell it to me, please.

  20. Práctica – Affirmative tú commands ¡10 pasos para conseguir un trabajo! Parte A: Tomás is trying to get a new job, and his colleague Marco has great advice for him to follow. Complete the following sentences with the affirmative form of an informal command to show Marco's recommendations. Hint: Use the same conjugation as "él" from regular present indicative tense, and remember the irregulars. Modelo: Llegar a tiempo a la entrevista. Llega a tiempo a la entrevista.

Complete the sentences with the negative form of an informal command to show how she is sabotaging his job search! Hint: Use the tú subjunctive conjugations.   27. La Discusión: • Tomás and Rosa have been married for years, but they can't agree on anything! They are both bossy and stubborn, and constantly order one another around. • In pairs, each partner should choose a role to play - Tomás or Rosa. Then, give voice to Tomás and Rosa's orders by changing verbs into informal "tú" commands. You can use the verbs from the list, or add your own!
