Senior TAKS re-takers 12 seniors failed at least one portion of the TAKS test.
Subjects that need addressing • 12 failed ELA • 5 failed math • 2 failed science • 1 failed social studies Out of the 12 seniors 3 failed multiple sections: • 1 failed ELA, Math and Science • 1 failed ELA and Math • 1 failed all four parts of the TAKS
Interventions • Seniors are pulled out from non-core subjects. ESL instructional aides tutor students that failed certain sections of the TAKS. • There are four ESL aides, one for each subject. • Materials used are released TAKS test and TAKS prep books. Schedules: Students go to H203 during designated periods. Teachers and students have been informed. • ELA- Monday, Wednesday and Friday • Math- Monday and Tuesday • Science- Wednesday • Social Studies- Thursday
Interventions • Weekly failure list are pulled and seniors are called in by me to discuss the problems. • Teachers are notified which seniors are failing their classes, and together we collaborate on solving the problem. • After first six weeks, all seniors that failed were give mandatory tutoring strips. • If seniors do not show up for pullouts or after school tutorials, we pull them out of class personally and walk them to class.
Problems • The senior that failed all parts of the TAKS was not going to class. • Several interventions were made: • One-on-one talks. • Collaboration with soccer coach and parents. • Collaboration with the students boss at work.
Conclusion • Because every student did not pass, the tutorials were not a complete success. Improvements: • Start earlier • Involve certified teachers • Morning and evening session • Find ways to get teachers to buy-in to pullouts
