  3. Dahl’s Life and Career Roald Dahl was born on September 13, 1916 in Wales and attended various boarding schools in England. Once he finished school, he joined the Shell Company and worked in Africa. Here he experienced many adventures such as snake charming and lion hunting. Next, he joined the RAF and flew in World War II eventually receiving the title of Flying Ace. After experiencing injury-related pains, he was transferred to New York to inspire the war effort in America. He used his skills of social interaction to become a regular at prominent social gatherings. He then moved back to Wales to be near his mother. He enjoyed living in the country and made friends with many of the people in the village, however he came to miss the life of luxury. He moved back to New York and re-entered the social arena. Here he eventually met his wife, actress Patricia Neal. They had five children, one of whom died at the age of seven. Many years later after thirty years of marriage, Pat and Roald divorced. Dahl then remarried a woman twenty two years his junior, Felicity d'Abreu Crosland. Years later, Dahl became a grandfather. These experiences and more inspired Dahl to write his numerous books. Beginning with The Gremlins and continuing to The Minpins, all of his works contain fantastic adventures and strange occurrences. They are all marked by dark, sarcastic humor that appeals to many. He dipped into many genres including poetry and non-fiction. But Dahl is best known for his children’s books. The most famous books include James and the Giant Peach,Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Matilda. Dahl died in 1990. September 13 has become known as Roald Dahl day and is celebrated all over the world.

  10. Handout • Instead of creating a handout for everyone in the class, I will email a fact sheet for any who wishes to have it. My email address is cduplantier@hotmail.com. Please email me and I will respond with the fact sheet and this power point. • I will also apply this practice in my classroom. Instead of giving my students papers about everything, I will operate on a system where most handouts will be given online via class website and email. • This practice is better for the environment as well as more convenient for the students. It will also prepare them for the future better because they will be more accustomed to computer use.
