Science A way of figuring out the natural world.
Galileo Darwin Copernicus Science • A way to answer questions. • Search for TRUTH. • Facts, laws, reasons things happen the way they happen. • INDIVIDUALS (Humans) answering questions for themselves.
Science • Subjective Reasoning (Subjectivity) • We each view things slightly differently. • How we interpret answers is subject to our preconceived ideas. • Unavoidable • Objective Reasoning (Objectivity) • See things as they TRULY are. • As little bias or preconception as possible • Avoid bringing our opinion into the answer.
A method for answering questions as objectively as possible…step by step: Observation Question Hypothesis Prediction Experiment Revision Conclusion Scientific Method
Science • Descriptive • Careful Observation Collection of DATA. • Qualitative Data (observations) • Quantitative Data (numbers) • Inductive Logic • Specific observations 1st Leading to • Broad Generalizations & Predictions
Science • Hypothesis-Based • Explanations for Why? & How? • Hypotheses = tentative answers for a ? • Testable • Repeatable • Falsifiable • Often, several alternate hypotheses are forwarded • Deductive Logic • General Ideas 1st Leading to • Specific Instances & Predictions
Hypothesis Testing =Scientific Experiments • As objective as possible. • Controlled • Control Group • Variable Group (Experimental Group) • Lend support to a hypothesis or • Refute a hypothesis
Scientific Theories • “Theory” suggests that “it’s only speculation”. • NO! • In Science, Theory = Accepted Truth. • Supported by massive amounts of evidence – experimental evidence. • So far, has not been disproved.
Scientific Models • Connects Theory with Reality. • Connects “Theoretical” with “Practical”. • Allows predictions by FITTING data.
Scientific “Culture” • Information is shared with a community of scientists (who scrutinize & criticize & tear each new discovery apart!) • Publications • Presentations • Collaboration • Competition
