2011: Superior National Forest • We’re hoping to get 500 Arrowmen from around Area 1 • That includes Section C-1A and C-1B • This project will directly benefit the Superior National Forest
Superior National Forest • Where is it? • North of Duluth, MN. • Superior National Forest includes the BWCA and the Superior Hiking Trail.
Base of Operations • Grand Marais, MN • 110 miles North of Duluth on Hwy. 61 • We have secured the local school as a place to stay
Cook County School • Camping on the school grounds • Cafeteria for food • Return each night • Storm shelter • Hot showers • Program provided every night
Scope of the Project • 4 Basic Projects • Vegetable Chain Lakes • Superior Hiking Trail • Sugarbush Single-track Mountain Bike Trail • Pincushion Single-track Mountain Bike Trail
Vegetable Chain Lakes • Constructing primitive campsites along several lakes in the Vegetable Chain • Includes brushing and clearing along with latrine and fire ring installation • Constructing portage trails in between the lakes • This project area is located about 35 miles north of Grand Marais off the Gunflint Trail.
Superior Hiking Trail • Trail reconstruction (raising tread, putting in turnpikes, check dams, water bars, rolling dips etc.) • Trail realignment • Trail tread maintenance • Brushing • Bridge and boardwalk construction
Sugarbush and Pincushion Mountain Bike Trails • Raking • Brushing • Bridge construction • Construction of the trail according to International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) standards
Who are we looking for? • Order of the Arrow members (Youth & Adult) from Area 1 • At least 14 years of age • Meet Philmont height/weight requirements for trail work • Those not meeting Philmont height/weight requirements can be used in support roles
Information • Cost - approx. $195/participant • Covers food, transport to projects, entertainment, etc • Dates – June 21-26, 2011 • Those needing advanced training may need to arrive earlier • Training • Tool use and swimming tests • Lodging • Tenting on school grounds • Food • Cafeteria style for breakfast and supper with bagged lunches on the trail
