presented by Joan Larsen and Bente Jensen Open Source in a metropolitan Library
Copenhagen Public Libraries • The largest library system in Scandinavia • 1 main library • 19 library branches • www.bibliotek.kk.dk – the 21. library branch is visited by more than 6,000 people a day
The result was: • Inconsistent navigation • No site search • A fatal lack of validation • Impossible to offer any central support • Solution: • A Content Management System
Key requirements • Totally decentralized maintenance • A system that would let us make any changes ourselves • Solution: • An Open Source system
Key features of Plone • Licensed under General Public License • Built in Zope • Using Python • Generates 100% valid xhtml 1.0 • Generates fully qualified URLs • Platform independent open source editor
If you can do it in HTML • You can do it in Plone
Portal workflow • 165 local users with access to their own branch site • 4 administrators have access to all folders • 2 Global managers have access to the Zope Management Interface (ZMI) • Pending publication (request) • 3-month auto revision notification
RSS feeds –easy in Plone • Monthly newsletter • Service news • New answers to FAQ
Blogs • Blog tools with Copenhagen Public Libraries logo • New music • New foreign books • Biblog – Library and it • Internet search • Library 2.0 DK • Brønshøj branch library • The patients’ library – Hvidovre hospital • KKB on tour
Our recent developments include: • Extended RSS possibilities • RSS feed based on a search string • Expansion of the event archetype • single-day or multi-day event • locations other than the branches • Automatic export of event information to a site listing all cultural events in Denmark • New sitesearch: Livesearch
Next • E-learning • - Eduplone • Translation • - LinguaPlone • Under consideration: • CompositePack • MapLocation • Plone Google Sitemaps • TagCloud
Advantages of Plone and Open Source • Open Source and Plone is low cost software • No manufacturer dependence • Our site can change as fast as the world around us • Large numbers of developers ensure the security
From spaghetti to Sushi • Before 2002 • All resources were manually made from scratch • Some resources had a finite life span and had to be removed manually • Manual management of broken links etc. • Content delivery lacked workflow • Few colleagues were able to contribute
From spagetti to Sushi • After 2002 • Strong workflow model • Open Source, so the price was right • Use what you need rather than buy unused features • Don’t pay for software licenses, pay for development
