Draft Agenda • Running your program like a “non-profit” inside Penn State • Is it a gift? • 2012-13 at a glance
What’s on your mind? • What would you like to learn from this session today? • I.E. - Fundraising tools, processes, rules of the road, expectations, best practices, how to get started, how to make an ask, how to finesse a relationship…….etc.
1. Extension - an embedded Non-profit • 4-H, Master Gardeners, RULE, Floriculture Trials, Shale Gas Education, Strong Women (and many more). • Significant advantage verses other non-profits • Leveraging resources • Proposal writing • Major gift solicitations • Donor research • Donor assessment • Corporate and Foundation guidance • Grant submission, processing, tracking
Staff and Volunteer Roles • Identification of prospective donors/sponsors • Introductions to prospective donors • Building relationships with donors • Thanking and acknowledging donors/sponsors in ways that THEY wish to be thanked and acknowledged • Great programming
Leveraging University Resources • Get to know the Extension Development Office – Eric McGinnis! • Provide guidance, insight, and access to direct support of fundraising efforts – volunteer or staff-led. • The better I understand your goals and how they fit in with Extension priorities, the more resources and support I can direct to you.
2. Is it a gift? Yes, if… • Donor is an individual, company, association, or foundation • Qualifies as charitable contribution by IRS • Donor may define the purpose • Unexpended funds are not returned • No quid pro quo • A report of expenditures may be requested • Research results are not required to be shared
Benefits of Gifts vs. Grants • No overhead or F&A charged to gifts • Modest F&A for unrestricted grants with some formal deliverable requirement • Processed through development office or Ag Sci grant office
3. 2012-13 At a Glance Fundraising Goal: $1,500,000 Planned Major Gift Solicitation Totals • 4-H - $1 million • Floriculture Trials - $150,000 • Master Gardener - $100,000 • RULE - $125,000 Stewardship: • Extension and 4-H Tailgate (September 2012) • 4-H Annual Report (October 2012) • Outreach Appreciation Dinner (October 2012)
2012-13 at a Glance Marketing/Awareness: • We have plans to develop a “Legacy in PA” program in partnership with Penn State Gift Planning and the MCOR. • We are developing a statewide 4-H focused estate giving campaign • A Gift Planning email is being sent in July to many donors and prospective donors at Penn State that highlights the 4-H Centennial through the lens of the 4-H Robotics Program. Annual Appeals: • 4-H Annual Appeal (November 2012) • Master Gardener Annual Appeal (October 2012) • 4-H Science Appeal (January 2013) – targeted corporate • 4-H Follow-up appeal (March 2013) Special purpose TBD • Floriculture Trials Appeal (June 2013)
