Guiding Reading vs. Strategy Lessons What’s the difference? How do you choose?
A Strategy Lesson is… • Similar to a mini lesson conducted with a guided reading group rather than with the whole class A Strategy Lesson is NOT… • A book introduction
A Strategy Lesson focuses on a strategy to develop higher level comprehension • Making inferences about characters • Summarizing and accumulating “big ideas” to get the “big picture” • Understanding that what a character says may or may not be true • Learning about characters through their words and actions • Metacognitive strategies
A strategy lesson is more appropriate for third grade students and above who no longer need a high level of support with word attack and other “tricky” book features
