Overview of the Intelligentsia • The Intelligentsia was a very small class as not many citizens in Russia were literate or educated. However their size and influence grew by the 1870s. • Included those of an educated background. They were thought to be very knowledgeable about the West as many of the members had travelled around the world.
Key Members • Main member of the Intelligentsia: Mikhail Bakunin. • This man was an anarchist (a person who believes in no central government as he believed that the state crushed individual freedom and should therefore be removed.)
What they wanted… The members of the Intelligentsia believe in science and reason so consequently were very hostile to ideas such as religion and the tsar. Many therefore wanted revolution in order to get rid of a central state, as like Bakunin, a many of the Intelligentsia were anarchists.
