Plotting Points on a Coordinate Plane

This lesson teaches students how to plot points on a coordinate plane, identify quadrants, and graph linear equations. They will also learn to compute x- and y-intercepts and sketch regions defined by linear inequalities.

  1. Bell Work 11/12/14 Graph the points on the number line.

  2. Next Chapter • Chapter 5A • Linear Functions I

  3. Heading 12/21/2019 The Coordinate Plane TSWBAT: plot points on a coordinate plane and identify the quadrant. Students graph a linear equation and compute the x- and y- intercepts (e.g., graph 2x + 6y = 4). They are also able to sketch the region defined by linear inequality (e.g., they sketch the region defined by 2x + 6y < 4).

  4. Notes • The Coordinate Plane • x-axis = the horizontal axis • y-axis = the vertical axis • origin = the center, is at point (0,0) y-axis x-axis origin

  5. Notes • Ordered pair x-coordinate y-coordinate • x-coordinate = the number of spots on the x-axis • if positive, go to the right • if negative, go to the left • y-coordinate = the number of spots on the y-axis • if positive, go up • if negative, go down

  6. Notes Plot the ordered pair Ex. 1) Start at the origin. 2) Move to the right or left according to the x-coordinate. origin What is the x-coordinate? 3) Move up or down according to the y-coordinate. What is the y-coordinate?

  7. Notes Now you try. Plot the ordered pair Ex. 1) Start at the origin. 2) Move to the right or left according to the x-coordinate. origin What is the x-coordinate? 3) Move up or down according to the y-coordinate. What is the y-coordinate?

  8. Notes Plot the points on the graph.

  9. Notes Now you try. Plot the points onto the graph.

  10. Notes • Quadrants What does quad mean? • a coordinate plane is split up by the x-axis and y-axis into four equal squares • we label the quadrants I, II, III, IV C y Number them counter clock-wise The top right one is first because all of the numbers are positive. x

  11. Notes Identify the quadrant the point is in. Point Quadrant Now you try.

  12. Summary • To plot a point you need the points ___________. The first coordinate is the __-coordinate and it tells you how many spots to go right (if positive) or ____ (if negative). The next coordinate is the y-__________ and it tells you how many spots to go ___ (if positive) or down (if ________). • coordinates • x • left • coordinate • up • negative

  13. Today’s Homework • Rules for Homework • Pencil ONLY. • Must show all of your work. • NO WORK = NO CREDIT • Must attempt EVERY problem. • Always check your answers.

  14. Homework 5.0 Plot the points onto the graph and name the quadrant.

  15. Ticket Out the Door • Complete the Ticket Out the Door without talking!!!!! • Talking = time after the bell! • Put your NAME on the paper. • When finished, turn your paper face DOWN. • Plot the point onto the graph and name the quadrant.
