  3. Why Italy? • Northern Italy was highly urban • 3 cities w/population of 100,000 • Pope and emperor’s had no control over Italy • Holy Roman Emperor defeated by Italian merchants • Great Schism weakened the Pope’s power.

  4. Merchants • Wealthiest and most powerful people in Italy • Power & wealth earned not inherited • Took pride in achievements because they earned them • Spent money lavishly
