  2. Sergiev Posad is our native city and its interesting to know some facts from its history. So, we tried to explore the historical hereditary of the place where we live. We think people should know the history of their country and remember the words of Pavel Florensky: « Do not forget your relationship, your past, learn your great parents and your great – great parents… Otherwise your life will be boring». At our English lessons we spoke and read a lot of folk crafts of Sergiev Posad and got interested in the history of Sergiev Posad very much. We are proud of our city and know much of its great past.   4. Traditional matryoshka from Sergiev Posad Sergiev Posad was the place where the first nesting dolls was made. Traditionally matryoshkas are nested dolls. The first doll in the nest was a girl dressed in a sarafan and wearing a kerchief. She was called matryoshka from the Russian name Matryona. Each this doll has an apron and a kerchief of not coinciding colours. Put in a row, the dolls are all many coloured and different. The big matryoshka is from 9 cm. of height, the smallest one is about 1 cm. Образовательный центр «Нива»

  5. Matryoshka Rowan This is a beautiful wooden handpainted matryoshka-doll. Outside doll is holding the branch of the rowan-tree. It is a Sergiev Posad matryoshka-doll. In Sergiev Posad, which is a forest region, people have always liked to paint matryoshka-doll with berries or baskets full of bright berries. Wearing a sprig of the Rowan also protected against charms. The tallest doll is 12 cm, the shortest one is 2 cm. Образовательный центр «Нива»

  6. Traditional matryoshka from Sergiev Posad It was a long-established tradition in Russian toy-making trade to manufacture hollow wooden dolls, one inserted into the other. It is irrelevant whether the Russian toy makers had a previous knowledge of the similar Japanese dolls or not when they developed the concept of the matryoshka doll. The actual design of the doll is not so significant as the artistic concept of insert-ing dolls into one another which is intrinsically organic to the Russian mentality. Playing with the matryoshka is first, an acquaintance with sequence and notions ‘less’ and ‘more’, secondly, counting from 1 to 5, thirdly, a material for development of children’s tactile sense and fine motor skills, fourthly, an article for a game with a plot. Very often the painter concentrated mainly on the figure, face of the person. This tradition of the Old Russian art came from Byzantium where this technique came from the ancient Rome.
