Mahamaya Girls’ CollegeAlumnae Association of North America About the association • Mahamaya Girl's College Alumnae Association of North America (MGCAANA) is a voluntarily led, non-profit organization incorporated in the State of Washington in March, 2005. The association received the non-profit organization status in October 2006. Our mission • Our mission is to build, foster, and promote the unique and total growth of each individual alumna and student of Mahamaya Girls’ College by providing a network of social, professional, educational, and cultural opportunities. Our vision • Our vision is to create a future where inspired, well-rounded, and successful alumnae, living in North America, and students of Mahamaya Girls’ College, Kandy, Sri Lanka work together to benefit society.

Mahamaya Girls’ CollegeAlumnae Association of North America On going activities • MGCAANA Newsletter “Maya Puwath” Published bimonthly to promote goodwill and networking among members, share news about Mahamaya, its alumnae living in North America and other parts of the world and the Colombo Branch of the OGA; share recipes, medical views etc…and publish current events of MGCAANA. • Host and Travel Club Provide safe accommodation to students (undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral) during short school breaks and longer vacations and also to facilitate acclimation of Mahamaya alumnae on arrival to the United States and Canada.
Mahamaya Girls’ CollegeAlumnae Association of North America Projects for the year of 2008/2009 • MGCAANA scholarship program for undergraduate and graduate students For the third consecutive year, MGCAANA awarded $250 scholarships to two recipients for the year 2008/2009. This scholarship is designed to provide cost of books and material for one single semester for Mahamaya Girls' College alumnae pursuing undergraduate or graduate studies in the United States and Canada. The goal is to recognize alumnae who demonstrate outstanding academic achievements, leadership abilities, and participation in extracurricular activities, and require a significant level of financial need. Our scholarship winners for this year were: • Vihara Dharmaratne: An undergraduate student at University of Mississippi majoring in International Studies • Shakya Premachandra: Agraduate student (MS) at University of Missouri at St. Louis
Mahamaya Girls’ CollegeAlumnae Association of North America Projects for the year of 2008/2009 • Donate French books to the Mahamaya Library –Phase II MGCAANA donated over 200 French books to the library of Mahamaya. These books were generously donated to MGCAANA by Lucie Rivoire whose parents were French Literature Professors. These books will add to the many French books already donated to the Mahamaya library from MGCAANA last year. We’re thankful to Lucie and her family for their generosity and to Kishani and James Martin who carried all the books to Sri Lanka.
Mahamaya Girls’ CollegeAlumnae Association of North America Projects for the year of 2007/2008 cont… • Sponsor disadvantaged students at Mahamaya With the help of current members and well-wishers of MGCAANA, 17 disadvantaged students were sponsored; the money was used to pay the hostel fees of the students for one year. • Donation to Hurricane Ike MGCAANA donated $50 to the Red Cross to help hurricane Ike victims.
Mahamaya Girls’ CollegeAlumnae Association of North America Projects for the year of 2008/2009 cont… • Donation made to Denzil Kobbekaduwa Trust MGCAANA donated $250 to the Denzil Kobbekaduwa Trust at the request of the Mahamaya Old Girls' Association Colombo Branch. A private donation of $1,100 by two of our friends was also sent to the Trust for the same cause. Around 10 soldiers who fought to protect the sovereignty of our country received artificial limbs with that donation.
Mahamaya Girls’ CollegeAlumnae Association of North America Projects for the year of 2008/2009 cont… • Donating a Projector for the Mathematics Laboratory MGCAANA donated a Epson S5 2000 Lumen 3LCD Multimedia Projector costing about $ 500 to be used in the Math Lab in Mahamaya.
Mahamaya Girls’ CollegeAlumnae Association of North America Future Projects • Establishing the “Vidya” endowment in Sri Lanka for the sponsorship program MGCAANA is in the process of establishing an endowment trust fund which is named as " Vidya Scholarship Trust Fund" to help the economically disadvantaged students at Mahamaya College. Our goal is to collect $20,000 this year and invest the money in Sri Lanka. An appointed board of trustees in Kandy will handle the scholarship program. A lawyer in Kandy has already written the deed for this project. We need your support. We have some brochures prepared for this project.
Mahamaya Girls’ CollegeAlumnae Association of North America Future Projects • Host & Travel Club – Exchange Student Program MGCANAA is in the process of coordinating the exchange of a prospective Mahamaya student with a MGCAANA member’s daughter for one semester. This will allow a Mahamaya student to come to the United States for a semester while the other will spend a semester studying at Mahamaya Girls’ College, Kandy.
Mahamaya Girls’ CollegeAlumnae Association of North America Fundraising • Fundraising committee organized to sell a collection of Batik wall hangings, and have raised $ 52.13 for the organization. • Through out the year, the “Guiding Light” volumes were sold which raised $1630.93 to continue MGCAANA’s activities. Membership Drive • The Board of Directors personally contacted all the members and invited them to attend the AGM and the dinner. • Contacted the membership regarding renewing the membership for the year of 2009/2010. To date there are 91 active members!!!!!!!
