What Is Scalar? Open Sources online publishing Platform run out by USC Media-rich, flexible, non-linear Primarily used by Digital Archivists and Academics
Let’s Get Started! • Step 1: Registration: • scalar.usc.edu • Click “Sign In” • Click “Register an Account”
Books, Books, Books • Books are the heart & soul of Scalar • Very flexible • Rich text • Html • Media-rich • Non-linear pathsmade of pages youcreate
What’s a Page? Books are made up of pages Each page contains content: text, video, photos, music – anything you want! Wide variety of possibilities for display
Importing • Most media is not hosted by Scalar! • It is “imported” from archives like Critical Commons, or even commercial websites like YouTube • Scalar is affiliated with a number of archives, and you can upload digital content directly from them, as well as from commercial sites like YouTube • Scalar will also host media files of less than 2MB
How to Import Media • This is the main navigation bar, located on the left-hand side of your screen • The top carrot (currently says “Import”) tells you know where you are • Hover over that carrot to navigate; Hit “Import” to add media • Still a bit buggy; “Import” won’t appear unless you’re in a book
Different Sources • Affiliated Archives: Academic sources (Critical Commons) • Non-affiliated: Commercial Sources (YouTube) • Local Media Files: Up to 2MB • Internet media files: can be hosted anywhere • Other Scalar books: hosted on Scalar
Other Options Psssst – this is easier!
Using Imported Media Once you’ve imported media, it’ll appear on the “Media” tab in your Dashboard Then you can use it in your pages!
What’s a Path? You can create paths by making a new page or editing an existing page. In the Relationships section of the page editor, look for the text “To make this page a path” and click “specify the items that it contains.” You can then add any pages or content and can even drag and drop to reorder them.
