2. Outline & Themes General outline: Themes: This surah belongs to the Makkan period and contains 8 ayat whose main focus is the Day of Judgment. The word ‘’earthquake’ is the keynote to this surah. It highlights the horror and convulsion of the Day of Judgement when the Earth will be shaken and will throw up what is inside it. People will appear in droves to be shown their deeds for which they will be rewarded or punished. Deeds: Every single individual, man or woman, will be shown his/her good or evil actions, however small. Every deed will be weighed with justice. Witnessing: The earth will witness for or against people.

Virtues & Backdrop Virtues: Backdrop: Equals to reading three surahs from the Musabbihat Equals to reading three from those [which begin] with the letters Alif, Lam, Ra‘ Equals to reading from those [which begin] with the letters Ha-Mim Equals to one fourth of the Qur’an. (Hadith of the man who did not have sufficient money to get married) The Quraysh denied the Day of Judgement They did not believe that God could resurrect the dead/bones They denied the afterlife

8. إِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ الاٌّرْضُ زِلْزَالَهَا Allah is refuting the denial of the Quraysh of the Day of Judgement The earth will shake repeatedly causing people to fall and slip It will be shaken violently This shake is nothing like ever seen before/ it cannot be compared to any other earthquake. The ha implies the entire earth or a promise from God Imam Alusi said in Ruh al Ma’ani: أي حركت تحريكاً عنيفاً متداركاً متكرراً { زِلْزَالَهَا } أي الزلزال المخصوص بها الذي تقتضيه بحسب المشيئة الإلٰهية المبنية على الحكم البالغة وهو الزلزال الشديد الذي ليس بعده زلزال فكأن ما سواه ليس زلزالاً بالنسبة إليه أو زلزالها العجيب الذي لا يقادر قدره فالإضافة على الوجهين للعهد ويجوز أن يراد الاستغراق لأن زلزالاً مصدر مضاف فيعم أي زلزالها كله وهو استغراق عرفي قصد به المبالغة وهو مراد من قال أي زلزالها الداخل في حيز الإمكان أو عنى بذلك العهد أيضاً

9. وَأَخْرَجَتِ الأَرْضُ أَثْقَالَهَا Athqaal: 1) what is in the belly of the earth, i.e, bodeis. 2) Treasures The Prophet said: The earth will throw out the pieces of its liver (its contents). Gold and silver will come out like columns. A murderer will come and say, `I killed for this' The one who broke the ties of kinship will say, `For this I severed the ties of kinship' The thief will say, `For this I got my hands amputated' Then they will leave it there and no one will take anything from it. Imam Shawkani Said: أي: ما في جوفها من الأموات والدفائن،. قال مجاهد: أثقالها موتاها تخرجهم في النفخة الثانية. وقد قيل: للإنس والجنّ الثقلان، الكنوز وَإِذَا الاٌّرْضُ مُدَّتْ - وَأَلْقَتْ مَا فِيهَا وَتَخَلَّتْ تُلْقِي الْأَرْضُ أَفْلَاذَ كَبِدِهَا أَمْثَالَ الْأُسْطُوَانِ مِنَ الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ، فَيَجِيءُ الْقَاتِلُ فَيَقُولُ فِي هَذَا قَتَلْتُ، وَيَجِيءُ الْقَاطِعُ فَيَقُولُ فِي هَذَا قَطَعْتُ رَحِمِي،وَيَجِيءُ السَّارِقُ فَيَقُولُ: فِي هَذَا قُطِعَتْ يَدِي، ثُمَّ يَدَعُونَهُ فَلَا يَأْخُذُونَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا

10. وَقَالَ الإِنسَـنُ مَا لَهَا The kafir will say what is matter with the Earth (who is raised us from our sleep) The believer will say (this is what the Rahman has promised and the Messengers foretold in truth) Imam Alusi said: أي كل فرد من أفراد الإنسان لما يبهرهم من الطامة التامة ويدهمهم من الداهية العامة { مَا لَهَا } تزلزلت هذه المرتبة من الزلزال وأخرجت ما فيها من الأثقال استعظاماً لما شاهدوه من الأمر الهائل وقد سيرت الجبال في الجو وصيرت هباء. وذهب غير واحد إلى أن المراد بالإنسان الكافر غير المؤمن بالبعث والاظهر هو الأول على أن المؤمن يقول ذلك بطريق الاستعظام والكافر بطريق التعجب.

11. يَوْمَئِذٍ تُحَدِّثُ أَخْبَارَهَا The Prophet said: Do you know what is its information) They said, `Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said, ‘’Verily, its information is that it will testify against every male and female servant, about what they did upon its surface. It will say that he did such and such on such and such day. So this is its information’’ Imam Shawkani wrote: وأخرج أحمد، وعبد بن حميد، والترمذي وصححه، والنسائي، وابن جرير، وابن المنذر، والحاكم وصححه، وابن مردويه، والبيهقي في الشعب عن أبي هريرة قال: قرأ رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم { يَوْمَئِذٍ تُحَدّثُ أَخْبَارَهَا } قال: أتدرون ما أخبارها؟ قالوا: الله ورسوله أعلم. قال: " فإن أخبارها أن تشهد على كل عبد وأمة بما عمل على ظهرها، تقول عمل كذا، وكذا، فهذا أخبارها " وأخرج ابن مردويه، والبيهقي عن أنس أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: " إن الأرض لتجيء يوم القيامة بكل عمل عمل على ظهرها " وقرأ رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: { إِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ ٱلأرْضُ زِلْزَالَهَا } حتى بلغ { يَوْمَئِذٍ تُحَدّثُ أَخْبَارَهَا }.

12. بِأَنَّ رَبَّكَ أَوْحَى لَهَا Allah gives permission to the earth to speak Allah inspires it to speak Imam Samarqandi in Bahr al Ulum: يعني أن الأرض تحدث بأن ربك أذن لها في الكلام وألهمها

13. يَوْمَئِذٍ يَصْدُرُ النَّاسُ أَشْتَاتاًلِّيُرَوْاْ أَعْمَـلَهُمْ 1) People will come out of their resting places in groups. 2) People will come out from the place of hisaab to either jannat or jahannam Ashtat: 1) some will be happy, 2) some fearful, 3) some will have the colour of the people of Jannat, 4) some will have the colour of the people of the Fire Some will go left some right with their different groups and religions Imam Shawkani said: والمعنى: يوم إذ يقع ما ذكر يصدر الناس من قبورهم إلى موقف الحساب أشتاتاً، أي: متفرّقين، والصدر: الرجوع وهو ضدّ الورود. وقيل: يصدرون من موضع الحساب إلى الجنة أو النار، وانتصاب { أشتاتاً } على الحال والمعنى: أن بعضهم آمن، وبعضهم خائف، وبعضهم بلون أهل الجنة، وهو البياض، وبعضهم بلون أهل النار وهو السواد، وبعضهم ينصرف إلى جهة اليمين، وبعضهم إلى جهة الشمال، مع تفرّقهم في الأديان، واختلافهم في الأعمال

14. فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْراً يَرَهُ - وَمَن يَعْـمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرّاً يَرَهُ Every deed (good or bad) will be shown to people The Prophet said: ‘’Do not under rate any good act, even if it is offering drinking water from your bucket to one who is seeking a drink, or meeting your brother with a cheerful face’’. أنزلت { إِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ ٱلأرْضُ زِلْزَالَهَا } ، وأبو بكر الصديق قاعد، فبكى، فقال له رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: " ما يبكيك يا أبا بكر؟ " قال: يبكيني هذه السورة، فقال: " لولا أنكم تخطئون وتذنبون، فيغفر لكم لخلق الله قوماً يخطئون ويذنبون، فيغفر لهم لَا تَحْقِرَنَّ مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ شَيْئًا وَلَوْ أَنْ تُفْرِغَ مِنْ دَلْوِكَ فِي إِنَاءِ الْمُسْتَسْقِي، وَلَوْ أَنْ تَلْقَى أَخَاكَ وَوَجْهُكَ إِلَيْهِ مُنْـبَسِط

15. فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْراً يَرَهُ - وَمَن يَعْـمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرّاً يَرَهُ The Prophet said:‘’O `A'ishah! Beware of the sins that are belittled, for indeed they will be taken account of by Allah’’. He also said: ‘’Beware of the sins that are belittled. For verily, they are gathered in a man until they destroy him’’. يَاعَائِشَةُ، إِيَّاكِ وَمُحَقَّرَاتِ الذُّنُوبِ، فَإِنَّ لَهَا مِنَ اللهِ طَالِبًا إِيَّاكُمْ وَمُحَقَّرَاتِ الذُّنُوبِ، فَإِنَّهُنَّ يَجْتَمِعْنَ عَلَى الرَّجُلِ حَتْى يُهْلِكْنَه

16. Protecting the Earth The Prophet said: ‘’Preserve the earth for verily she is your mother. No person will do a deed, whether it is good or evil except that she will speak of it’’ Imam Shawkani cites: وأخرج الطبراني عن ربيعة الخرشي أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: " تحفظوا من الأرض فإنها أمكم، وإنه ليس من أحد عامل عليها خيراً، أو شرّاً إلاّ وهي مخبرة "
