  2. As you know, there are many words in the English language. • It would be impossible for me to teach them all to you. • So in order to be efficient (that means to do something quickly), we will learn how many English words are constructed of prefixes and root or base words.

  3. What is a Prefix? • A prefix is a dependent word added to the beginning of a word to change or alter its meaning. • The “pre” in prefix is actually a prefix. • It means “before”. • So now I’m going to give you some examples of the most common prefixes and their definitions…

  4. Examples of Prefixes • 1. Un – It means “not.” • A. Unlikeable means to not be likeable. • B. Unsavory means to not be pleasant. • C. Unequal means to not be equal. • D. Unnecessary means to not be necessary.

  5. Examples of Prefixes • 2. Re – It means “again.” • A. Rearrange means to arrange again. • B. Redo means to do again. • C. Rebuild means to build again. • D. Reappear means to appear again.

  6. Examples of Prefixes • 3. In – It means “not” • A. Invisible means not visible. • B. Indiscreet means not be able to keep secrets. • C. Inviolate means not altered or changed. • In can also mean “into.” • A. Incorporate means to brings something that exists into something else. • B. Influence means to come into authority.

  7. Examples of Prefixes • 4. Dis – It means to remove. • A. Disbar means to be removed from practicing law. • B. Disassociate means to remove an association or connection with something else. • C. Disconnect means to remove a connection. • D. Disadvantage means to remove an advantage.

  8. Why should we learn Prefixes?

  9. We learn prefixes because it is an efficient way to learn many new words in a short period of time!
