  14. 11. LBJ Defeats Goldwater • In one of the biggest electoral blowouts of all time, Johnson wins reelection over Goldwater • Johnson’s victory paves the way for Medicare and the Voting Rights Act • It also leads to greater escalation of the Vietnam War

American Troops in Vietnam • By the end of 1965, there are almost 200,000 American troops in Vietnam • American forces rain down bombs on North Vietnamese positions, deploy napalm and Agent Orange on the countryside • Vietnamese forces fight a guerrilla war, hiding in the jungles and taking shots at the Americans in the night

  17. 13. The Draft Expands • Increased fighting in Vietnam required more troops than the number of people volunteering • Over 1.5 million men were drafted into military service during the Vietnam War • Many resisted the draft by burning their draft cards or fleeing to Canada

  19. 14. Anti-War Protests Begin • Americans see the horrific images on television every night • Fears of being drafted spur many young people to protest the war • Millions of Americans take to the streets to protest American involvement in Vietnam

Muhammad Ali • In 1966, Ali declared himself a “conscientious objector” to the war in Vietnam • He refused to fight for a country that he believed viewed blacks as second-class citizens • He was arrested, and sentenced to five years in prison. His conviction was later overturned but he was stripped of his boxing title

  21. 15. Hawks and Doves • “Doves” • Opponents of the war who advocated a peaceful solution • Sometimes unfairly called communist sympathizers • “Hawks” • Hard-Line anti-communist war supporters This terminology is still used today as recently as the Iraq War
