  2. In 1998, the first time Russian scientists carried out multi-spectral surveys (multifrequency surveys) of the harp seal whelping patches in the White Sea with the aim to assess abundance of pups. At the same time research were pursued on the sea ice to plot a whelping curve and to set out confirmation patches for the purpose of the survey data adjustment. During 1998-2003, six airborne surveys of whelping patches and two airborne surveys of molting patches were carried out. Airborne surveys of the harp seal in the White Sea in 1998-2003 were carried out from onboard flying laboratory AN-26 “Arktika” using the multi-spectral technology. In 1998 this air surveys participated Canadian sientists.

  3. The major purposes of the molting patches surveys are to assess total abundance and distribution of the harp seals, to study age structure of the population, to investigate distribution of pups and to study the effect of ice conditions on the survival of pups.
