  6. Real-Time Shop Floor Control • Shop Floor Control is concerned with • the release of the production orders to the factory; • checking the progress of the orders through various stations; • acquiring current information on the status of the orders. • Scheduling/Dispatching • Monitoring • Data Collection

  7. Real-Time Shop Floor Control Shop Order, Process Plans, Schedule Criteria, Priorities,… Performance Measures Real-Time Shop Floor Data with RFID Scheduling Detailed Schedule Monitoring Dispatching Data Collection Status Instructions Shop Floor Data PRODUCTION SYSTEM SHOP FLOOR

  8. RFID in Real-Time Shop Floor Control • Can be used as an advanced monitoring technology in real-time shop floor control, • voluminous production data should be collected, analyzed, and maintained • Provides availability and visibility of “item level” production data in real-time, • Supports productive coordination and collaboration of different manufacturing resources, • Production information can be shared and distributed • Helps timely implementation of enterprise-wide, information-driven decision-making models, • Supports real-time manufacturing logistics decision-making process in a network-centric manufacturing environment.

  9. Research Objective • The research efforts focus on investigating innovative approaches that • Reduce delays and eliminate non-value added production activities by effective use of real-time data provided via RFID technology; • Respond rapidly to unexpected events on the shop floor. • The technical objective is to demonstrate integration of RFID technology with the manufacturing logistics and shop floor control.

  10. Experimental Plan • Studying traditional real-time control techniques for manufacturing logistics; • Investigating current use of similar technologies; • Studying feasibility and applicability of RFID in different manufacturing environments; • Mathematical feasibility and applicability analysis of integrating RFID in manufacturing logistics; • Investigating effects of shop floor RFID applications on overall supply chain management.

  11. Deliverables • An extended study report on RFID applications to manufacturing logistics considering different automation technologies such as materials handling, storage, and machine tools, • An extended simulation study of manufacturing logistics and real-time shop floor control with RFID applications.

  12. Potential Benefits to Member Companies • The research will help to streamline business operations, • Reach production data in real-time and effective transmission of information, • Use that data for manufacturing logistics. • The research will show the opportunity of enhancing productivity and competitiveness • Effective solutions for lower costs, • Improved timeliness of product development, • Enhanced product quality, • Increased product and process innovation.
