What is a transition? • Definition of TRANSITION • 1 a: passage from one state, stage, subject, or place to another :change b: a movement, development, or evolution from one form, stage, or style to another • Using transitional words and phraseshelps papers read more smoothly, and at the same time allows the reader to flow more smoothly from one point to the next.
Look at your packet • Transitions enhance logical organization and understandability • Look at your packet. There are a lot of ways to say similar things. • This means you don’t have to keep repeating the same word and sound like a robot in your writing.
Making a transition sentence • In a paragraph is as easy as understanding what a complex sentence is • No, a complex sentence is not one you do not understand. • There are four types of sentences.
Sentence Types • Simple • Compound • Complex • Compound-complex
Simple sentence • a sentence that has a subject and predicate or a noun and a verb • He ran. • He ran very fast. • The rabbit hid in the bushes. • The beagle sneezed.
Compound sentence • A compound sentence is when you join two simple sentences with a • ; ,and ,but ,so • He sneezed, and the rabbit ran away. • I was happy; he was happy. • The rabbit lived to run another day, so we went home. • I wish someone would catch the beagle, but it won’t happen today.
Complex sentence • An independent clause is a sentence that someone understands without asking questions. • I want to go with him. IT HAS A SUBJECT AND PREDICATE • A dependent clause is a fragment, or a piece of a sentence that someone needs to ask questions about in order to get information to understand it • The rabbit. • To the zoo. IT DOESN’T HAVE A SUBJECT AND A PREDICATE OR EVEN EITHER.
Complex sentence • Dependent clause + an independent clause = A complex sentence ! Although it was raining, we went to the concert anyway. Because I am tired, I will take a nap. I will take a nap because I am tired. When you leave, you must say goodbye. You must say goodbye when you leave.
Compound-complex sentence • This has a compound sentence and a dependent clause added • Although it was raining, we went to the pool, and he jumped into the water.
