On the slip of paper, write your name and the four properties of Earth’s atmosphere. Include an example of each. McDougall textbook, p. A11 Do Now
1) In your composition notebooks, make the table below. 2) Then use your computer to research was is dust made of. Complete the left side of the table below. Background Research
3) Make Dust traps by cutting a 1 x 1 cm square in a notecard, then cover the square hole with scotch tape. Place card sticky side down to trap dust. 4) View card with magnifying glass and record what you see on the right side of the table. Experiment
Properties of Earth’s Atmosphere • Each group should brainstorm some examples of the following key properties of Earth’s atmosphere. Pick your best TWO examples for each and make a postershowing and explaining each example. Divide the paper into fourths, one for each of Earth’s atmosphere properties below: • Air has substance (meaning it has MASS and VOLUME) • Air temperature decreases as altitude increases • Air pressure & air density decrease as altitude increases • Atmosphere protects & supports life Group Activity
Demonstration:What happens when air is lost? Procedure: • Float a candle in a shallow bowl of water. • Light the candle and leave it to start burning well. • Place a glass jar over the candle and see what happens.
