Introduction • In the transfer channels of the SPS the main use of the screen monitors BTV was to observe qualitatively the beam position and shape. • To perform profile measurements Secondary Emission Grids were used with a spatial resolution between 0.8 and 5 mm and a total number of 16 or 32 channels. • In order to cope with the characteristics of the LHC beams a large number of channels and a high spatial resolution are required. • With the use of different screen materials, image acquisition and processing software, the TV screens can be used for precision profile measurements. Conclusion • Profile monitors already installed in the transfer line between the PS and SPS are currently used for the diagnostics of LHC type beams. • With the use of two screens (Al2O3(Cr) and titanium) a very large dynamic range in intensity > 105 can be achieved. • A spatial resolution up to 40µm can be obtained with a simple mechanical and optical set-up. • The availability of 2-dimensional representations and a large number of points per projection are the major advantages of the BTV profile monitor. • Single bunch to bunch profile measurements can be made with the use of OTR screens observed by a Multi Anode Photomultiplier. • Question: are all foreseen screens to be kept?
